21 NEXT launches with €3bn AUM, targets €800m buyout fund

About 21 NEXT

  • Founded: 2024 (merger of 21 Invest and Tages)

  • Headquarters: Milan, Italy

  • AUM: €3bn as of launch

  • Strategy: Pan-European lower mid-market buyout

  • Backing: Edizione, the Benetton family investment holding company

21 NEXT launched following the combination of 21 Invest and Tages, both previously under Edizione's umbrella. The new firm is preparing an €800m pan-European lower mid-market buyout fund as its debut vehicle. Management has stated plans to more than triple AUM from the current €3bn base.

The launch arrives as European mid-market fundraising remains bifurcated — established names with multi-fund track records are clearing targets, while newer platforms face extended timelines. 21 NEXT sits somewhere between: it's a new brand, but backed by Edizione's balance sheet and inheriting portfolios from two predecessor firms. The €800m target is ambitious for a debut fund in a market where first-time European buyout funds averaged €250m–€400m over the past 18 months. Comparable recent launches include Intermediate Capital Group's Strategic Equity V at €3.5bn (final close, November 2023) and Ardian's Mid Cap Buyout Fund VI at €3.2bn (first close, September 2023) — both multi-fund franchises with decades of LP relationships.

The question is whether LPs will treat this as a first-time fund or a rebranding. If the firm is positioning the €800m vehicle as a continuation of 21 Invest or Tages strategies rather than a clean-slate debut, the target becomes more plausible — but that framing will need to hold through deployment, where team continuity and deal sourcing will be scrutinized against the predecessor firms' pipelines. The three-times-AUM growth target implies either a step-up in fund size after the debut or a faster fund cycle than European mid-market norms, both of which tighten execution risk.
