Academic Capital Partners targets $300m debut Asia education fund

About Academic Capital Partners

  • Founded: 2024

  • Strategy: Private equity, education sector, Asia and Middle East

  • Leadership: Founded by the former founder of Global Schools Group

Academic Capital Partners is targeting up to $300m for its debut fund focused on education assets across Asia and the Middle East. The firm was launched by the founder of Global Schools Group, an international schools operator. The fund represents a spin-out strategy from the operating business into a dedicated investment vehicle.

Education-focused PE funds face structural questions that generalist funds do not — mainly around regulatory constraints and political sensitivities in target markets. Asia and the Middle East have different regulatory frameworks for foreign ownership of education assets, particularly in K-12, which complicates cross-border deployment. A $300m fund spread across two regions with divergent regulatory environments will likely require either deep local partnerships or a narrower sub-sector focus to deploy at pace. Recent education-focused funds in Asia have targeted either pure-play edtech (lighter regulatory load) or higher education and vocational training (more scalable than K-12 in most jurisdictions).

The founder's background in operating international schools could offer deal-sourcing advantages, but it also raises the question of whether the fund will tilt toward buy-and-build strategies around school networks or take a broader view across subsectors like language training, test prep, and education technology. Funds with operator-founders often outperform on value creation but can struggle with portfolio diversification if the GP's network skews too heavily toward one business model. How Academic Capital Partners structures its first 3–4 deals will signal whether this is a schools roll-up vehicle or a diversified education platform investor.
