Aegon AM has launched an evergreen private credit fund targeting institutional investors in the UK and Europe. The structure uses insurance policies from highly rated insurers as credit enhancement, providing a layer of protection against borrower defaults. The fund is positioned as an open-ended vehicle, meaning investors can commit and redeem at intervals rather than locking capital for a fixed term. No fundraising target or initial close size was disclosed.
The insurance-wrapped structure addresses two tensions in private credit at once. Evergreen vehicles have proliferated as LPs demand liquidity optionality, but redemption pressure during stress can force asset sales at the worst time. Wrapping the portfolio in insurance policies shifts tail risk to insurers with long-duration liabilities and stress-tested balance sheets, making the fund less vulnerable to investor runs. The trade-off is cost—insurance premiums eat into net returns, and insurers themselves underwrite selectively, constraining which credits qualify for coverage. How Aegon prices the premium load relative to peers offering uninsured evergreen structures will determine whether this resonates beyond the most conservative allocators.
The fund arrives as private credit managers face mounting pressure to differentiate in a maturing market. Over $150 billion in new private credit dry powder was raised in 2023 alone, and funds with undistinguished strategies are taking longer to deploy. Aegon's insurance-backed angle could appeal to liability-driven investors like pension funds and family offices seeking downside protection without sacrificing private credit's yield premium. The test will be deployment pace—insurance underwriting typically slows deal execution, and if the fund struggles to put capital to work at scale, the structure's theoretical appeal may not translate to sustained LP interest.
