KCGI Private Equity is targeting a 2027 launch for Fund II, according to managing director Taeyoung Chung. The Seoul-based firm plans to expand its LP base internationally with the sophomore vehicle, building on its debut fund's domestic institutional backing. The firm operates as the private equity arm of KCGI, which has been active in shareholder activism across Korean public markets since 2017.

The six-year gap between Fund I's 2021 close and the planned Fund II launch is unusually long for a firm signaling momentum, particularly in a market where Korean GPs have been raising follow-on funds on three- to four-year cycles. The timeline suggests either cautious deployment from the debut vehicle or a deliberate choice to wait for fuller realization data before returning to market. For international LPs being courted this time, the lack of a clear track record from Fund I by 2027 will frame the entire conversation — they'll be underwriting strategy and team, not vintage performance.

The international LP pivot is the sharper question. Korean institutional capital has historically been the patient money in domestic PE, willing to back local managers through market cycles. If KCGI is broadening its base, it's either because Fund I's scale ambitions outgrew the domestic pool or because the firm sees cross-border LPs as less sensitive to the governance and chaebol-concentration risks that Korean institutions live with daily. Either way, the pitch deck for Fund II will need to explain what changed between 2021 and 2027 — and whether the activist playbook that worked domestically translates for LPs in New York or London.
