L'imad Capital is preparing to raise capital from external investors for a new private equity vehicle, marking the sovereign platform's first move to accept outside LP commitments. The fund will focus on private equity and other alternative assets, though target size and timeline have not been disclosed. The shift represents a departure from L'imad's historical model as a purely government-funded investment arm.
Sovereign wealth funds opening their fund structures to third-party capital is a newer phenomenon in the Gulf, but not unprecedented — Mubadala's asset management arm has raised external commitments for credit and infrastructure strategies, and Saudi Arabia's PIF has explored co-investment models with institutional LPs. The question with L'imad is whether external LPs will underwrite the same allocation decisions a sovereign balance sheet would, or whether the introduction of fiduciary obligations narrows the mandate in practice. LP appetite for emerging-market GP exposure has cooled over the past 18 months, and Abu Dhabi domicile alone does not guarantee distribution.
The fundraise also surfaces a structural tension: sovereign platforms typically deploy on longer time horizons and with less return pressure than traditional PE funds. If L'imad raises a closed-end vehicle with a 10-year term, it will need to demonstrate exit discipline and IRR-focused portfolio construction that may conflict with the patient capital posture sovereign entities are known for. How the firm reconciles those expectations — and whether it can attract LPs without offering governance or reporting standards closer to Western fund norms — will be the real test of this model's viability.
