Adams Street closed its latest secondaries program at more than $5bn, a 43% step-up from the $3.5bn predecessor raised in 2022. The firm is targeting deployment into GP-led restructurings and LP portfolio sales as the secondaries market surpassed $200bn in annual transaction volume for the first time in 2024. The raise comes as Adams Street continues its multi-decade secondaries track record, with programs running since the mid-1980s.
The $200bn market milestone is less a new equilibrium than a liquidity release after years of distribution drought. Secondary volume spiked because LPs needed exits their GPs couldn't deliver through IPOs or trade sales, and because GPs facing extension votes turned to continuation vehicles to buy time. Adams Street's $5bn raise positions the firm to capitalize on supply, but the question is whether that supply persists once primary distributions normalize — or whether secondaries revert to a $120–150bn-per-year structural role as the pressure valve, not the primary exit.
The 43% step-up also sharpens the deployment math. At $3.5bn, Adams Street's prior fund had roughly 3–4 years to put capital to work at a measured pace. At $5bn, with deal volume potentially peaking, the firm will need to move faster or hold larger positions per transaction — both of which compress the risk-return profile unless the team scaled in parallel. The secondaries market's 2024 surge created the fundraising opportunity, but it's the 2025–2027 deployment environment that will determine whether the size was justified.
