EQT has secured a €200m anchor commitment from the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO) for its €5bn EU Scaleup Fund, a growth capital vehicle targeting European technology companies. The fund is structured as a pan-European initiative to provide late-stage financing for tech firms scaling operations. EIFO's commitment marks the first disclosed LP backing for the vehicle.
The anchor commitment from a sovereign-backed investor signals continued LP appetite for large-scale European growth strategies despite recent deployment headwinds in the asset class. Nordic LPs have historically anchored pan-European tech vehicles—Denmark's ATP co-anchored Balderton's $1.3bn fund in early 2024, and Norway's sovereign wealth fund has backed multiple EQT vehicles over the past decade. The €5bn target positions this fund as one of the largest dedicated European growth vehicles currently in market, comparable to General Atlantic's $7.8bn Fund XI raised in 2023, which included significant European deployment mandates.
The fund's structure raises questions about deployment pace relative to target size. EQT's prior growth equity funds (EQT Growth and EQT Ventures) have typically operated in the €500m–€1.5bn range with 15–25 portfolio companies per fund. Scaling to €5bn while maintaining selectivity in a market where European tech valuations compressed 40–60% from 2021 peaks suggests either larger check sizes per company or a shift toward later-stage positioning overlapping with buyout strategies. Whether EQT maintains its historical 18–24 month deployment timeline or extends the investment period to accommodate the larger fund base will clarify the firm's view on European tech recovery timing.
